Chapter 23 - The Daoist Descends the Mountain (Part 2)

Over one weekend, according to statistics, they received a total of over two thousand two hundred visitors, completely exceeding the mission's requirement!

For the next five days, even if not a single person came, Duan Jiaze could still earn a visitor center while lying down.

Moreover, through these two days of operation, Lingyou Zoo had laid a good foundation. Its fame had been greatly enhanced through television and online media, and it had also left a good impression on the visitors, earning a very good reputation.

The most magical thing was that they had developed repeat customers in just two days. Yousu already had a small fan base, all of whom decided to come back to Lingyou Zoo next weekend to see her.

Everyone was very tired after these two days. On Monday evening, Duan Jiaze treated his university classmates to a big meal out to thank them for their wholehearted help.

His classmates were very emotional:

"This is what they mean by 'there's always a way out'. Who would have thought that our Jiajia was just an unemployed environmental engineering grad a month ago, and a month later, he's become a successful entrepreneur!"

"Let's applaud Duan Jiaze, the first one in our class to start a business. If you need help in the future, just give us a shout."

"If I can't make it in the future, I'll just go to your zoo and be an animal..."

Everyone roared with laughter, all agreeing.

"Hey, that's right. I want that Xiao Su girl to feed me."

Duan Jiaze broke into a sweat. "Thanks for the help, my brothers and sisters. If you're going to say that, I won't promise anything else, but there'll be plenty of feed..."

During this meal, Duan Jiaze was forced to drink a lot of alcohol. If everyone hadn't considered that he had to work the next day, they definitely wouldn't have let him off so easily. Even so, he drank so much his steps became unsteady, and he hailed a taxi to go back.

When Duan Jiaze got out of the car, he saw what looked like a few people standing at the zoo entrance. Two of them were even wearing police uniforms, which shocked him several degrees sober. He staggered over, "Officer, what's, what's going on..."

The two police officers supported him. They took a look and recognized him from the last time he filed a report. "We almost thought you weren't coming back! Director Duan, take a look at these two."

Duan Jiaze looked and saw two Daoist priests standing there, one plump and the other thin and elegant.

The police officer said: "These are the martial brothers of that little Daoist priest you reported last time, Daoist Master Shao Wuxing and Daoist Master Jiang Wushui from Linshui Temple."

'Oh my god, the little Daoist priest went and got his elders! They're here to settle the score!'

All traces of drunkenness vanished from Duan Jiaze. He quickly raised his hands in a gesture of innocence, "I didn't hit him!"

The thin Daoist priest chuckled twice. "Rest assured, we're not here to stir up trouble. We just asked the two police officers to help verify our identities, hoping to have a calm chat with you. Please also rest assured, we have no intention of committing fraud."

They just hadn't expected Duan Jiaze to be away from the zoo after closing time, with no employees around either. The police officer even said that this place was rather poor and couldn't afford to hire that many people. If Duan Jiaze hadn't come back soon, they would have left.

The moment Duan Jiaze heard they wanted to chat with him, he got a headache. It was that 'I know what you want to talk about, but I don't want you to know that I know, and I don't want to talk to you about it' feeling.

"Here's the thing, I drank too much with my classmates and my head really hurts, Daoist Master. How about you leave your contact information, and I'll get in touch with you later, okay?" Duan Jiaze said sincerely. "I also hope you can convey my apologies to your junior martial brother on my behalf. I misunderstood him last time."

Duan Jiaze had a very innocent look, and his speech was even more upbeat. Even though Shao Wuxing and Jiang Wushui were seasoned veterans, they were deceived by his appearance.

Shao Wuxing took out a business card. "I understand. Then I hope you will contact me as soon as you've rested well. This matter is of great importance."

"I understand, Daoist Master." Duan Jiaze also carefully put the business card away.

The meeting concluded successfully. The police officers escorted Shao Wuxing and Jiang Wushui back, and Duan Jiaze also waved goodbye and entered Lingyou.

As Duan Jiaze walked towards the small building, he looked at the business card. The card was designed with quite a bit of style; the paper was thick with a fine texture, and two lines were written on it: Shao Wuxing, Office Director of Linshui Temple, followed by a mobile phone number.

Duan Jiaze casually stuck it into his pants pocket. He saw that the light in the break room was on. Opening the door, he found Yousu and Luya engrossed in watching a TV series.

Neither of their rooms had a TV. Luya did have a mobile phone, but it was supposedly an Immortal Realm version and wasn't compatible with the Human Realm's network.

Duan Jiaze glanced at the screen again, which was showing: "Investiture of the Gods", and was instantly speechless.

"The Zoo Director is back," Yousu spared a moment to smile at Duan Jiaze.

Duan Jiaze couldn't help but ask: "Is this show faithful to the original?"

Yousu laughed out loud. "You must be joking. How can a TV series be faithful? The novel itself is inaccurate enough, and they based this on the novel."

Duan Jiaze: "..."

Duan Jiaze: "Then let me ask a more worldly question. How did your physical form back then compare to this actress?" he asked, pointing at the gorgeous actress playing Daji on the screen.

At first, he hadn't thought much of it, but after spending so much time with the loli-like Yousu, Duan Jiaze couldn't help but be curious about what the real Daji looked like.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," Yousu said modestly, then changed the subject. "However, we Nine-tailed Foxes don't win on looks alone."

Duan Jiaze immediately thought of those obsessed tourists and nodded in agreement. As the saying goes, true beauty lies in the bones, not just the skin. Besides, the Nine-tailed Fox has a racial talent.

"Zoo Director, would you like to sit and watch with us?" Yousu asked when she saw him still standing at the door.

"I'm not watching. I drank too much, I'm going to bed. You two should also..." The corner of Duan Jiaze's mouth twitched. "Never mind, you can watch as late as you want."

......

The next day, Duan Jiaze inevitably woke up a bit late, getting out of bed only at half-past eight. But there was sure to be little business today. Although he had interviews scheduled, they were in the afternoon, so he could indulge himself a little.

By this time, the zoo employees had all arrived, and Duan Jiaze greeted them.

When Xiao Su saw Duan Jiaze, she said worriedly: "Zoo Director, when I came to work this morning, I saw Little Su watching TV in the break room. Her eyes were all red. I asked her how long she'd been watching, and she said she hadn't slept all night. Then she looked at the time, rubbed her eyes, and said she was going to wash up and go to school.

"So I mentioned it to Brother Lu, to pay attention to the child's schedule, that watching so much would ruin her eyes at such a young age. But Brother Lu just sneered and said it's fine if they get ruined."

Duan Jiaze: "..."

That really was something Luya would say...

Xiao Su: "Even though she's not my child, I really can't stand to watch this. I've long felt that the relationship between Brother Lu and Little Su as siblings isn't very good. Little Su is actually closer to you, Zoo Director. Zoo Director, can you do something about that child?"

Looking at Xiao Su's pained and distressed expression, Duan Jiaze was also very embarrassed. "I'll, I'll try."

Xiao Su said with relief: "That's good."

Duan Jiaze thought, he would later buy two TVs and put them in Luya's and Yousu's rooms, so they could watch TV in their own rooms.

However, he was a poor Zoo Director who needed to budget carefully, so he planned to buy the TVs on an installment plan. If he got struck by lightning and died halfway through, then so be it...

By now, Duan Jiaze, who had changed his clothes, had completely forgotten about the two Daoist priests from last night. He had been planning to avoid them anyway.

How could you ever explain something like this to a Daoist priest? If he were discovered consorting with demons, wouldn't he become... how should I put it, a traitor to humanity?

"Oh right, next week, we're going to build a visitor center, right around here." Duan Jiaze gestured to the area near the entrance and said, "The construction won't take long and won't affect our ability to receive visitors."

Xiao Su: "...Zoo Director, how do you have money again!"

Duan Jiaze: "Hey, for real this time. Once it's built, the money will be all gone!"

Xiao Su: "..."

......

In the afternoon, Duan Jiaze interviewed a group of people. Using an agency was much less hassle than posting the job opening himself. These people had all been pre-screened by the agency according to his requirements, which made it much more convenient for him to choose.

Duan Jiaze immediately hired three new employees: a girl named Xu Wen, and two guys, Wang Zhao and Wang Yibai.

Wang Zhao and Wang Yibai were both assigned to zookeeper positions. Along with Liu Bin and Xu Chenggong, that was almost enough for the current number of animals; they could find part-time staff for peak periods. Xiao Su and Xu Wen would be responsible for finance and the visitor center together, with Xiao Su handling the financial work alone and supporting Xu Wen when needed.

Once this visitor center was built, it would integrate functions such as reception, ticket sales, information, and small merchandise sales all in one.

This was just what Duan Jiaze could think of for now. Based on the enclosure upgrade he had witnessed last time, the functions of this visitor center should also be very comprehensive and high-end.

Duan Jiaze began to fantasize, "Say, which mission do I have to complete to get a real Aquarium?"

"Isn't that one tank enough for you?" Luya showed a disgusted expression. "This venerable one detests aquatic creatures the most. In the past, I would eat every one I saw!"

Luya was of the fire element, and as they say, fire and water are incompatible. It was only because he couldn't kill his colleagues in Lingyou Zoo that he merely scared the fish in the Aquarium all the time.

But Duan Jiaze wasn't happy to hear that. "I think aquatic creatures are quite cute. They're easy to raise and beautiful."

Luya scoffed, an extremely disdainful expression appearing on his handsome face, his mockery level sky-high.

"..." Duan Jiaze thought to himself, 'Damn, this bird really deserves a beating.'

And so, imperceptibly, one, or perhaps two, huge flags had been raised...
