Chapter 40 - Chapter 39

These humans from another star system, descendants from the same ancestors as Earth humans 160 years ago, have diverged from their homeland at a turning point in history over the past century. They have clearly evolved into a new species that Fu Luo is unfamiliar with and does not understand.

Their society abnormally pursues efficiency. As the third industrial revolution nears its end, humans and objects exhibit a startling uniformity. The entire manufacturing industry is like a rigorous armory, interlocking in every aspect. From production to assembly, every inconspicuous little part must seamlessly comply with unified procedures.

Things produced in this way, no matter what potential malfunctions may occur, are all equipped with the same repair system before the equipment leaves the factory and is put into use - just like Earth's garment factories providing spare buttons with new clothes.

Fu Luo guessed that the numbers that had just flashed quickly on the lens were probably the legendary "exhaustive scanning" - the computer scans through all the malfunction records in the database one by one, compares them, and gives the closest answer with high accuracy.

Papers on applying this malfunction resolution method to general manufacturing had actually appeared in Earth's technological innovation activities, but ultimately died in the womb because it was not accepted by the public.

There was no way around it. Starting from around the 20th century, Earth had the concept of anti-monopoly. Even making a spoon for eating encouraged competition between manufacturers of all sizes. Electronic products especially had manufacturers racing to update faster than each other. Every component in a mobile phone was from a different manufacturer. After so many years, the United Nations on Earth had not even been able to complete the great undertaking of unifying plug types across countries, let alone large-scale production data.

And this godlike powerful repair system not only pointed out the malfunction to Fu Luo, it also prompted her with repair tools.

At this step, a little manual operation was finally needed. Fortunately, with capable tools, it was just a matter of cleaning it up a bit and then welding the broken parts together - this she could still do.

No wonder repair technicians had the lowest status here. It turned out the work itself was so lacking in technical requirements. If not for the fact that detailed equipment repairs had certain demands on the limb flexibility of repair personnel, this job might have long been replaced by robots.

Only when the lens fully displayed that the malfunction was resolved did Fu Luo nonchalantly seal the cooling system cover back on and silently turn her head, waiting for the other party to speak.

However, the haughty green-uniformed man sized her up and down thoughtfully. His information light flashed as he soundlessly said, "Didn't notice earlier, you're actually a woman."

Could it be that the system here in the other star system still had gender discrimination, such as not accepting female soldiers in repair units?

Fu Luo did not understand the customs, so she did not hastily reply.

But the expression of the green-uniformed man turned ambiguous. The fickle human expression paired with the ice-cold information light devoid of any intonation seemed very incongruous. "Few women are willing to do this kind of dirty bottom-level labor. Especially since I noticed you're not bad looking, it shouldn't be hard to find some ways to change jobs, right?"

At this point, even a more foolish person would have understood the other party's meaning.

This... was a rather novel experience.

She tried hard to recall her childhood experiences of taking Wang Yacheng to the arcade and to treat the other party like an arcade machine. She finally stammered out her first sentence using the information light.

"I will report you." In order to not make herself seem like she had a split personality, she made her expression as disdainful as possible to match the transmitted words.

The other party was disgusted by her "unappreciative" attitude and glared at her fiercely for a moment, seemingly intending to remember this little repair soldier who dared to offend him, so as to take revenge in the future.

"So annoying, it would have been better to just take a little risk and directly kill him earlier," Fu Luo thought. "Much better than stupidly having a staring contest like this."

Finally, with an expression of "I won't let this go", the other party tossed an information light at her: "Follow."

Sure enough, the black repair mission was not over yet.

The man from the other star system led Fu Luo to take a special direct elevator, going all the way up. The elevator was transparent. Fu Luo rubbed her fingers - the scenes here were all being recorded without omission into her multifunctional tool pliers.

The elevator only stopped after rising all the way to the top floor.

The top floor had an ominous tranquil feeling.

As soon as the door opened, before even exiting the elevator, there was an iris and fingerprint inspection system.

After nervously passing through, Fu Luo had not even walked 30 meters before encountering a second checkpoint requiring swiping one's work card. Fu Luo noticed that on the sign next to the checkpoint, beside the light orange square representing repair technicians, there were three bars. When swiping the card, the three indicator lights simultaneously dimmed for a moment. There were probably rank requirements for repair technicians coming here.

Fortunately, the one she had robbed barely met the three-bar standard.

Walking less than 50 meters further, she arrived at the third checkpoint. There were people standing guard here.

Fu Luo silently activated the shielding function on her pliers - it was said this thing could shield Earth's laser knives, firearms, blades and other weapons from security inspection systems. She didn't know if it would work here on an alien planet.

She started to regret following along.

Fu Luo handed the toolbox to the security personnel for inspection. Her heart was all over the place as she walked through the security scanner. The quality of the Type 2 tool pliers was indeed very reliable. The security scanner actually gave face and did not sound an alarm.

She was just about to relax.

At this moment, Fu Luo abruptly saw the leading male officer spread his arms and get patted down by the security personnel.

Fuck, she had been tricked!

Unless the nerves in these alien humans' hands were dead, there was no way they wouldn't feel the gun hidden at her waist.

Two people were a meter away from her, with a third person a bit further back. Killing someone here and hoping to go unnoticed was out of the question. Fu Luo recklessly thought, she could first use the gun to take out the further one, then take advantage of the two people closer to her not having time to draw their weapons and deal with them next, sliding down the elevator cable.

If lucky, she might be able to find where the small warships or patrol ships were docked on the vessel. If unlucky...

At this time, the security officer sent an information light to her, ordering her to move forward.

...Then she could only hold an oxygen gel capsule in her mouth and spacewalk again.

She thought this way nonchalantly, loosened her collar, and walked forward. To her surprise, the other person glanced at her, seeming a bit startled: "A woman?"

Fu Luo managed a timely, nervous smile.

The security guard was young. He hesitated for a moment, probably feeling embarrassed. Unexpectedly, he didn't search her body, only waving the detector in front of her from a distance. He actually let her pass!

Fu Luo took back the toolbox woodenly, the murderous intent she had mustered dissipating just like that. Only then did she notice that she had been too nervous earlier, and cold sweat had soaked through the back of her clothes. Fortunately she was wearing two layers, so it didn't seep through.

"Feels a bit like a waste of emotion," this rascal thought, taking advantage of the situation.

The man leading the way brought Fu Luo into an office at the very back.

He knocked on the door respectfully and transmitted a light message to the person inside.

"Commander, the maintenance worker has been brought in."

The man inside turned around and nodded - he was wearing a black uniform.

So "black" was the color of high-ranking military officers on enemy ships.

The officer's gaze lingered on Fu Luo's face for a second. He pointed to a water purification machine with a red light on the side, then paid them no more attention.

Repairing this wasn't difficult. Earth also had similar small household appliances. Fu Luo estimated that even without that fault elimination gadget, if she had half a day to fiddle with it, she should also be able to repair it, albeit clumsily.

At this moment, with the help of the repair gadget, she was free to observe the office of the enemy's high-ranking military officer.

Very quickly, Fu Luo discovered that the officer was commanding a battle - although it was all light signals coming and going, she only glanced at the light screen and her heart sank. Of course she could understand the cross-sectional diagram. The front lines had started fighting.

The multifunctional ring faithfully recorded all the light signals. Fu Luo, on one hand, didn't want to leave, wanting to record more information; on the other hand, she was anxious to know what the content of those flying light signals were. Her mood was even more complex than falling in love.

Unfortunately, repairing the water purifier didn't require too much time. Fu Luo also didn't dare to let people see that she was deliberately delaying. Seeing the light on the machine turn from red to green, Fu Luo lowered her head to pack up the toolbox. There was no more reason to linger, so she could only follow the person who brought her to leave.

As a result, that shameless green-uniformed man used his authority to stop the elevator after descending three floors. This was probably where he worked. Fu Luo noticed that the markings on this floor were also green.

The man led her to the stairwell, his expression lazy and annoyed. He tossed a light message saying "get out of here by the stairs yourself, don't waste elevator energy", then pointed to the long spiraling staircase, indicating for Fu Luo not to be an eyesore here.

Fu Luo lowered her head, seemingly angry but not daring to speak, and walked down the stairs silently. The man at the stairwell entrance snorted heavily, turned and walked into the corridor. Suddenly, he felt a chill on the back of his neck, then knew nothing more.

Fu Luo used his body to cover her movements. She lowered her head, seemingly intimately putting her arm around the man, and dragged him away.

She actually felt a bit of a heartache. There was only one anesthetic needle in her ring. Using it on this man was such a waste.

Although Fu Luo's family was not poor, for some inexplicable reason, she had a bit of a peasant mentality. Whenever there was only one of something left, no matter if it was useful or not, she would feel that it was extremely precious. Once she was forced to use it, she would feel very insecure.

Fu Luo dragged the man into the men's restroom and threw him into a stall, locking the door - this was the safest place she could think of that was not under surveillance. Then she sat on the toilet, connected the ring to the stolen light signal demodulator receiver, and the few light messages recorded earlier were immediately decoded and transmitted into her brain.

"Now is not the time. The main force of the other side has not entered the 'field of vision'."

"Yes, I know. The other party has opened 'diffuse reflection' communication. They probably have sensitive personnel in the scout ship who noticed the communication tracking, but the impact is not significant - what should really be worried about is the solar wind storm."

"Yes... but the '**' electromagnetic pulse field has never been tested due to special reasons. Putting it directly on the battlefield, isn't it too risky?"

"Yes, Commander."

"Reduce the attack range, weaken the firepower, guide the enemy firepower, and lure them into '##'."

Since the light information was directly connected to Fu Luo's nervous system after being demodulated, concepts that she could not understand could not be fully received by her nervous system.

"Field of vision" and "diffuse reflection", these quoted concepts, were the closest explanations that could be found within her scope of knowledge, while the asterisks and hash symbols later should be concepts she had never heard of.

But Fu Luo was familiar with the term "electromagnetic pulse" that followed the asterisks. Since ancient times, there had been electromagnetic pulse attacks, known as the "second nuclear weapon". Although ground applications originated in the United States, China quickly caught up. In the next few hundred years, China had always been leading the world in this field.

Therefore, in military school, the concept of electromagnetic pulses, like the "Four Great Inventions", was the first to be instilled in students as the glorious history of our military to enhance their national pride.

But on this battlefield, the ones far ahead in the electromagnetic field were obviously no longer the Chinese Space Forces in the Earth Allied Forces, but their common enemy - humans from the other star system.

If she was late, there would be no time. Fu Luo suddenly stood up and took the risk of opening the implanted communicator in her ear.

The sound of a request to connect rang out.

Fu Luo didn't idle. She drew out the laser knife at her waist, ready to risk her life.

Hurry up and connect, hurry up and connect...

She had never felt that the actions of her own command personnel were so slow. At this time, Fu Luo had already heard footsteps coming from outside the restroom.

Finally, after a long torment, Yang Ning's voice sounded beside her ear.

But Yang Ning didn't let her speak.

"Fu Luo? Where are you? No matter where you are, leave immediately!"

Fu Luo transmitted all the light signals in the ring over. When the progress bar was just a little bit away from being full, the restroom door was suddenly kicked open.
