Chapter 96 - Chapter 94

"Be careful!" Xia Chuan called out, but by this time it was too late for him to rush over there.

Dennis was so focused on the syringe being pushed towards him by the waves that when he grabbed the unconscious Professor Linton and struggled to paddle forward a couple of strokes, grasping the syringe, and then turned back with an excited expression, he could do nothing except freeze in place in the shadow cast by the scrap car.

As for Gerald, he held the unconscious Anyao in one arm against his chest while pulling Gardner with the other, looking more disheveled than ever before.

They couldn't even raise their hands to protect their heads, only able to watch helplessly as that huge mass of black scrap metal came crashing down on top of them.

In that instant, both their pupils contracted into tiny dots. At the critical juncture between life and death, even the calmest person can't avoid being overcome with panic and fear.

Dennis' frozen expression appeared dazed and desperate. He subconsciously closed his eyes, only feeling the incessant water droplets from the car body dripping down, slapping against his face, each one smashing painfully, pattering like a countdown to death.

The wind whipped up by the steel had a hard, metallic smell. When it hit his face, it carried the cold breath of death.

He nearly forgot to breathe.

However, that bone-chilling wind ultimately stopped just a hair's breadth away from his face. The water droplets at close range had already linked into lines, falling all over his face in a drizzle, hitting him so much he could barely open his eyes.

It was only when he felt himself nearly suffocating that his blank mind started working again. As if just realizing something, he released his clenched jaw in a daze and tentatively opened his eyes halfway.

As a result, he saw that twisted, misshapen car swaying and hanging less than four inches above his head, making creaking sounds, but not descending any further.

"Wh-what happened..." Dennis muttered in a trance, staring at Xia Liang in disbelief for a moment before following Xia Liang's gaze to look at Gerald beside him.

Only then did he discover that Xia Liang's eyes in his madness were fixed unwaveringly on Anyao. This slender woman now had her head half-lowered, her wet black hair plastered to her cheeks and neck, making her bloodless face appear even more pale and lifeless.

Xia Liang tilted his head slightly, narrowing his eyes.

His features resembled Xia Chuan's, both possessing an extremely cold and plain look. When expressionless, they appeared even more icy. However, when he looked at Anyao, the cold and dangerous aura about him seemed to weaken a bit, replaced by a hint of blankness and hesitation.

Both Gerald and Dennis didn't dare make any more movements, afraid of disturbing Xia Liang. They maintained the utmost vigilance, their nerves taut, their gazes sweeping back and forth only between the scrap car overhead and Xia Liang.

A moment later, Xia Liang, who had been staring at Anyao the whole time, finally moved the scrap car away with hesitation. Then releasing his grip, that black scrap car fell back into the water with a splash, sinking towards the depths.

In that instant, Shen Lan, who had already been eyeing him, unexpectedly gave a fierce swipe of its tail, sending the off-guard Xia Liang tumbling twice. The tentacle that was struck even cracked open from the violent impact.

With that tumble, Xia Liang was flung in the opposite direction from Xia Chuan, temporarily no longer a threat to Xia Chuan's safety. The pain from the blow instantly enraged him. No longer paying any mind to the others who posed no threat, he turned and engaged in battle with the mosasaurus.

The sight of two giant beasts fighting was truly not something ordinary people could withstand. Even if temporarily not drawn into the fray, it still made one's heart pound with fright.

Wave after giant wave was churned up. Even the water droplets that splashed out struck people's faces and bodies with considerable force, leaving them sore and aching.

The berserk Shen Lan clearly held the absolute upper hand this time, practically pummeling Xia Liang. The latter, compared to before, seemed a bit distracted, perhaps because he had seen Anyao. As a result, Xia Liang was unable to pose a clear threat to Shen Lan.

Shen Lan's attacks were swift and fierce, like a raging storm, beating Xia Liang until he had almost no ability to defend himself. Most of his body sank below the water's surface as he retreated in defeat. In the blink of an eye, he had fallen back again to where Dennis and Gerald were.

Xia Chuan's heart jolted in alarm, afraid he would turn and fish that scrap car out of the water to attack Dennis and the others. So ignoring the still bleeding wound on his arm, he quickly swam over, intending to lend a hand. But when he got close, he only saw Gerald alone.

Dennis had inexplicably vanished.

His heart seized with shock, thinking Dennis had been swept underwater by Xia Liang's tentacles when he wasn't paying attention. His brows immediately furrowed as he dove underwater. But looking around, he still didn't see anyone.

Then just as he surfaced, he saw the usually timid Dennis had somehow circled behind Xia Liang. He suddenly leaped up. Though his posture wasn't as fluid and explosive as Xia Chuan who had undergone training, he still managed to grab onto Xia Liang's tentacle.

His actions, in the eyes of others, were practically no different from courting death.

If Xia Liang casually flung him or hooked his neck with a tentacle, he would be done for.

But he seemed to not have considered this at all. His left hand gripped tightly to the raised suckers on the tentacle, then he raised his right hand high.

The syringe that had fallen from Xia Chuan's hand was now clutched firmly in his grasp.

Dennis' face was pale as he swallowed. Then gritting his teeth, he cleanly stabbed the needle into the area behind Xia Liang's brain near his neck. Amidst Xia Liang's sudden frenzied struggling and thrashing, he pushed the syringe's contents in all at once.

As soon as he pulled out the needle, Xia Liang fiercely flung him a great distance away.

Xia Chuan swam several meters and raised his uninjured hand, scooping him up.

"Nice work," Xia Chuan said, his heart settling.

Dennis' face was still ghastly white, probably scared after the fact when he recalled what he had just done. But he still gave Xia Chuan a very strained smile and forced out proudly: "I'm a good enough friend, right? Even if my skills are lacking, I can still make myself useful, right?"

"Of course." Xia Chuan patted his shoulder, and then headed straight towards Shen Lan together with him.

Professor Linton's injection had an immediate effect. Just as he said, 98% of the information update in Xia Liang's brain had been completed before, and with this injection, he broke through the obstacles within seconds and completed the remaining 2% of the update.

By the time Xia Chuan reached Shen Lan's side, Xia Liang had calmed down from his madness.

The blood streaks in his eyes had not yet dissipated, but his expression was clearly different, no longer carrying the frenzied murderous intent from before, but instead a deep fatigue and momentary confusion that he couldn't recover from.

"I..." He looked down at his own state, then swept a glance at the few people he had left in a sorry state, rubbing his brow with a bit of a headache, "It seems I've caused quite a bit of destruction."

"Three minutes and fifteen seconds left." Gerald looked at his watch and said expressionlessly, "Shouldn't you guys go take out the old nest of the experimental site before catching up? Otherwise, no one here or not here will survive."

Xia Liang's face changed abruptly, not even bothering with his headache anymore. In his frenzied state just now, he had been chasing Shen Lan and Xia Chuan, completely unaware of the ins and outs of the "self-destruct device", and was momentarily disoriented. He hurriedly said, "What do you mean three minutes and fifteen seconds?"

"No time to explain, let's go first and talk later." Xia Chuan waved at him, then pointed to Shen Lan who had transformed into a mosasaurus, saying, "Just follow him."

Without a word, the group nimbly climbed onto the mosasaurus' back.

Seeing this, Xia Liang also knew the situation was urgent, so he didn't ask any more questions. He immediately followed Shen Lan, heading in the direction Gerald pointed, advancing at extreme speed.

The water trails left by the two transformed sea beasts on the sea surface left long lines, the speed of disappearance not even comparable to the speed of advancement, as if a knife had split the inland sea. The broken spray rolled up white foam, floating on either side of them.

Xia Chuan and the others didn't know how fast the mosasaurus could go at full speed. They only felt that if they were slightly careless, they would be blown rolling into the sea by the oncoming wind.

"Holy shit, this is even more exciting than the convertible plane just now. A real mosasaurus isn't this fast, right?" Dennis finally couldn't help but shout.

After saying that, he fell silent for two seconds, and then his super long reaction arc finally reached the end, belatedly starting to cover his face and howl, "Oh my god, oh my god, a mosasaurus, holy shit, a human transformed into one, help, it's the first time I've seen something so magical, I, I, I want to go to the bathroom..."

Xia Liang: "...Where did this clown come from."

Xia Chuan: "..."

Shen Lan: "..."

Gerald: "..."

He didn't have the time to pay attention to Dennis at all. All his attention was divided between two things.

One was giving directions, because the speed of Shen Lan and Xia Liang was really too fast, faster than he had imagined. With each blink of an eye, the surrounding scenery had already changed, a second too slow and he might not have time to indicate the direction. And the other thing was the countdown.

"Two minutes and thirty seconds left." Gerald said, raising his hand to point to a fork ahead, "Hold your breath and dive down from the left, less than 500 meters and we'll be there."

As soon as he finished speaking, not to mention someone with strong action like Xia Chuan, even Dennis, who was howling, reflexively took a big breath.

Just as they had just held their breath, Shen Lan and Xia Liang's bodies suddenly sank, diving straight down into the water.

Xia Chuan and the others each grabbed an unconscious person, raising their hands to tightly grasp Shen Lan's body, facing the strong countercurrent, swimming at high speed towards their destination.

Gerald's estimate was not bad. The mosasaurus' body was huge, and with a few tail swings, a hundred meters had passed. They quickly arrived at their destination.

"One minute and fifty seconds left." Gerald gestured in the water, then pointed to the house-sized metal cube in front, raising his hand to indicate the location of two latches.

It was a cube that looked seamlessly tight with almost no points of entry, as if it was cast from a single piece of metal. If Gerald hadn't pointed it out, they wouldn't have known where to start.

The opening method of such a thing was not known to outsiders in the first place, and even if it was known, it was not something an ordinary person could easily open, not to mention being underwater, the obstacles increasing exponentially. So the main machine of this experimental site was actually very well protected.

Gerald didn't give Xia Liang too much explanation about the ins and outs, nor did he have the time to explain. He directly pointed to the two latches, making a "smash hard with both hands at the same time" gesture, and then patted Shen Lan, using his hand as a tail, making a fierce swinging motion.

Xia Liang didn't ask any more questions either. At a time like this, there was no need to know the reason, just knowing what to do was enough.

Just as Gerald had his back to the metal cube, gesturing to Shen Lan and Xia Liang, he suddenly felt a pain in his waist. He subconsciously covered his waist and looked down, only to find blood gushing out from inside, quickly dispersing with the water.

At the same time, Dennis also suddenly covered his arm and shoulder. However, by the time he reacted, it was too late. The blood had already dispersed around his body, like ink dripped into a cup.

Underwater, it always seemed to turn everyone's movements into slow motion, even their expressions. Xia Chuan saw Dennis and Gerald's eyes slowly widen, filled with surprise.

Dennis hurriedly pressed on his wounds, probably trying to stop the bleeding, but when he pressed on his arm, he couldn't press on his shoulder, and when he pressed on his shoulder, the arm couldn't be stopped.
